Plenty of athletes were honoured recently at the Special Olympics annual presentation day.

It was also a time to farewell a mentor to the program.

The association held the event at RJ’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Diner on 13 November to celebrate a big year.

The big winner of the day was Sarah Russell, who took home the Kirstie Houston Memorial Award for her efforts with basketball.

She was joined by Jason Dixon, who won Volunteer of the Year plus claimed an athletics medal with Jacob Last.

The other awards went to Holly Hadley, Matthew Walk and Amber Clarkson in basketball, Timothy Klein in equestrian, Nicholas Jefferson and Tayla Sim in table tennis, and Nathan Curd and Ken Penny in ten-pin bowling.

Attendees also farewelled retiring basketball coach Shane Davis, honouring him with a cake designed for the occasion.

He leaves after serving 10 years at the association.
