Kolan South State School welcomes cane safety message

Students from Kolan South State School were going ‘loco’ for cane train safety with Bundaberg Sugar representatives and South Kolan police visiting to share the importance of cane train safety with the students.

Kolan South State School principal Ben Spargo said Friday 26 July was another great day at Kolan South because the visit from the crew at Bundaberg Sugar just added to the excitement of the day for students.

“Fridays are always a wonderful day at our school as we have playgroup, hotdogs were so on the menu courtesy of the Kolan South State School P&C but to also have a locomotive parked at the school that the students could look over was just fantastic,” Mr Spargo said.

The Cane Rail Safety Presentation using locomotive Kolan was a chance for both Bundaberg Sugar’s cane supply personnel and South Kolan Police to remind students of the important safety message when it came to cane season.

Bundaberg Sugar’s Jenny Abrook said while students were very eager to have their turn in the driver’s seat of the locomotive, they were also very attentive to the ‘to do’ list that was presented to them focusing on safety.

This to do list is a good reminder to all and includes:

– Do stop at all flashing lights and do not proceed until the lights have stopped flashing.

– Do look in both directions at a crossing.

– Do walk carefully when walking across the tracks.

– Do not stop on the tracks.

– Do not play on the tracks.

– Do not pick up anything from the tracks.

– Do not throw anything onto the tracks.
