A spin around the dance floor with sequenced dancing, or a little friendly competition over table tennis, carpet bowls or cards, all are a welcome reality for the Burnett Senior Citizens.
Following the motto of ‘while we live we grow’, the Burnett Senior Citizens is set to celebrate their 30th anniversary, providing such welcome social and active options for at least 100 seniors for each of their sections of the group from Coronation Hall in High Street Bundaberg.
Burnett Senior Citizens committee member Kevin Trimmer said they were proud of how they bring the community together with their eldest member being 104 years old and still driving her own car to the dance.
“While she no longer dances, she welcomes the opportunity to join us for the music and social get together afterwards,” Mr Trimmer said.
“We also have a number of members who are over 90, heaps over 80 years old and the majority over 70, but all definitely with a great big smile and a wonderful perspective on life.
“We encourage anyone with a light-hearted and cheery attitude to come along and join us and see how we dance to sequenced tunes to stimulate our body and mind, play table tennis as a gentle sport to keep us on our toes, carpet bowls to test our concentration and skill, and cards for laughs.
“The social side is very important to us as this is the influential stage of the event, where over a cuppa and intermingling, we inspire one another to come back and do it all over again.”
The beauty of this group is that they are also a not-for-profit organisation and are able to keep their costs down with all activities organised by voluntary participants.
The next exciting event for them and to allow current, previous and perspective members to celebrate Burnett Senior Citizens 30th anniversary is their annual ball starting on Saturday 13 July at Coronation Hall.
The annual ball will be held from 6pm to 10.30pm with music by High Noon and an entrance fee of $10 with a lucky door prize, raffles and novelties included as well as supper which includes finger foods and dessert.
Then on Sunday from 10am to 1pm, there is a second event with entry $10 also including a lucky door prize, raffles and novelties followed by refreshments.
“It is exciting to be able to offer the chance to rouse oneself and dance the night away to a live band, a time when the ladies dress in their finest and the men are proud to be by their side creating the evening as the prime night of the year.
“Having not had enough, the dancers return the next day for another dance.”
