Roll into Christmas in July

While the nights might be chilly, Rink Revolution Bundaberg’s Nick Phillips and Lucy Phillips are ready to turn the heat up with an indoor Christmas in July skate on Saturday 6 July.

Since its inception, Rink Revolution has continued to raise the popularity of roller skating locally, with those who loved it previously giving it a go again and newcomers giving it a try.

The Christmas in July at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct will be their 10th skate the main pavilion and the couple can’t believe they are getting closer to celebrating their first birthday.

Asked what was the inspiration behind this event, Nick said Rink Revolution was honestly like their baby for himself and Lucy.

“We split the workload pretty evenly, but Lucy’s the brain behind all our wild ideas and she’s the genius who dreamed up our themed nights,” he said.

“They just add a whole new level of fun — new photo ops, cool games, and we even get to dress up.”

With a commitment to making their events value for money, Rink Revolution came up with an initial eight-hour skate marathon which sees newbies encouraged to start early, while the pros can roll out later.

“We quickly realised Bundaberg was lacking a safe indoor spot for beginners—somewhere with a smooth floor and no distractions and that’s how our sensory skate was born.

“We still play music, but it’s dialled down a notch so skaters can chat and practice their moves – where else can they do that?

“The disco skate is hands down our favorite session because who doesn’t love skating to music, playing games, and winning prizes.”

The Christmas in July event definitely isn’t lacking in entertainment options with a new photo wall for some fun snaps, a Christmas music game, present themed prizes, a best dressed competition and Santa might even make a visit.

“We have a great community and amazing people attend our events.

“One of our skaters recently told us that the atmosphere is really great – it’s really encouraging to hear that people are enjoying themselves.

“We have definitely seen growth from those who started coming nearly a year ago and who are still coming.

“The change is really transparent – from barely able to stand to crossing over backwards.

“The biggest surprise we get is how much people really want to go skating but haven’t actually heard of us.

“We were promoting in Sugarland Plaza last weekend and seeing people’s reactions to our vision was pretty exciting.

“We even met a figure skater who started jumping up and down because she had somewhere to practice.”
