Early crop has proven delicious for Bargara Berries

While they might be a bit harder to find this year with the Hughes Road roadworks, Bargara Berries’ Debbie and Michael Meiers have definitely grown a bumper crop this year that has customers commenting on just how delicious their strawberries are.

Michael said this year marks their 23rd season and it had been a crazy ride so far.

“In February down went Bargara Berries’ Debbie and Michael Meiers the plastic – 23 kilometres, shiny white and gun barrel straight and then Debbie and I raced off to Tasmania to the National Berry Quest to see the latest in berry production innovation, while making some great friendships from as far away as Western Australia,” he said.

“March came along and we planted the earliest we ever had on Wednesday 12 March, with special plants that had been growing in a tray in potting mix.

“Unfortunately, it rained and then rained some more and more and this turned into a nightmare for us with the millet cover crop resprouting, greeting us with a sea of green.”

Thankfully for their customers, both at the farm and in the store, this didn’t halt Debbie and Micheal who were pleased that with a bit of hard work fruit was being picked before Easter and then the shop was opened on Tuesday 22 April, all happening a month earlier than anticipated.

Whether visiting the farm at 104 Hoods Road Meadowvale, or at the shop at Bargara, 100 Hughes Road Bargara, Debbie said it was best to come from the Windermere Road side.

“If people are finding it hard to get it us, they are more than welcome to call me on 0438 599 520 and I can give them directions, because we have the farm open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and encourage people watch Facebook for extended opening hours.

“We have a very plentiful supply of strawberries which has made for some fresh and delicious eating for us customers, but also the opportunity to fully stock the shop with some tasty options which is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”

One things locals should also look out for is Bargara Berries very full upcoming events schedule starting with the full moon markets on 11 June from 5.30-7.30pm at the farm.

Another event to celebrate the very appropriate strawberry full moon will be a special tickets event with a music by local trio Low Key who will be playing some jazz and blues and a delicious long table menu designed by well known local chef Dion Taylor.
