Following the PCYC’s mantra of building safer, healthier communities together through youth development, it is giving young men the chance to be a CHAMP.

The CHAMP program at the PCYC Bundaberg is the Channelling Healthy Aggression Mentoring Project program that provides positive role models to work alongside young people to improve their life choices.

Bundaberg Police Liaison Officer Hami Shelford and Acting Sergeant and Youth Program manager PCYC Bundaberg Luke Handley are using boxing as a vehicle to foster personal growth, create a positive and supportive relationship between participants and their mentors, including police officers, and improve relationships with local schools and communities.

Acting Sergeant Handley said since commencing the program on Wednesday 10 July and starting with approximately 20 participants across the two sessions, numbers had continued to grow.

“We run two sessions at PCYC Bundaberg on a Wednesday afternoon with 3.30pm to 4.15pm for 12 to 15-year-olds and 4.45pm to 5.30pm for 16 to 18-year-olds,” he said.

“All of our programs and activities encourage social cohesion, address whole of community needs and positively impact local communities.

“The more youth development programs we can deploy, the bigger effect we can have on crime prevention, enhancing communities and establishing the leaders of tomorrow.”

Acting Sergeant Handley highlighted that this program was great for both young men and women as it allowed them to build confidence and release stress in a comfortable and safe environment led by positive role models.

“It also allows the youth to form greater relationships with their local officers, breaking down barriers whilst positively impacting their mental and physical health.

“I believe boxing is a great sport to improve cardiovascular health, body composition and strength, whilst having fun.

“In a world overrun by technology and social media, I believe our young people need these outlets to have human connection, physical engagement, and exposure to healthy masculinity.”
