It was a special moment for community member Cynthia Hoogstraten with the official dedication of the community bench seat near the inlet at Innes Park.

This seat had been a passion project for Cynthia who, with the support of the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise and the community, now has a quiet place to reflect.

Cynthia said the view from the seat was spectacular and metaphorical, as it was an example of the ebb and flow of life, forever changing, yet beautiful.

“I have found that so many conversations have arisen with people sharing their cancer journey, and we have already received positive comments from people who are looking forward to sitting there to reflect on their loved ones,” Cynthia said.

“As a funeral celebrant, I have been able to share with families, to make some time to buy a slice and coffee from the local bakery, and head down to the bench to reflect.

“It is a healing space, and I even became quite emotional on the dedication day, not for myself, as I am in recovery, but for a couple who were present whose brother died from cancer and who won’t be attending their much-anticipated wedding.

“So many stories.

“I even made a new friend, and we have decided to catch up for coffee on the bench.”

The meaningful dedication of the community bench was held near the inlet at Innes Park for all those impacted by cancer, including survivors, loved ones who have died, and carers.

“Thank you to the community for their donations, the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise and Bundaberg Regional Council for supporting the initiative.

“Thank you to those who have shared their cancer journey; may this bench and its beautiful view offer you some comfort.”
