Showcasing the beauty of their craft is just one of the things that members of the Bundaberg Quilters do, for them they welcome the opportunity to share their skills with others through their comfort quilts.
This has seen them make numerous wonderful donations to those in need whether undergoing health treatment in hospital, those welcoming some support and care like Bundaberg Legacy families or Rotary Lodge and they also provide much needed comfort for families experiencing domestic and family violence through the support of EDON Place and Phoenix House.
Their most recent donation was six children’s and six adult’s quilts for Phoenix House, but for members, it is as simple as ‘making quilts is what we do’.
Comfort Quilt co-ordinator for BQI Mrs Val Tuohy, who has been patchwork/quilting for over 30 years, said the Comfort Quilt Program has been ongoing since the 1990s and is just one of the activities currently undertaken by the club, which is made up of more than 160 members at present.
“With the knowledge of increasing need in our community, it is my belief that we should assist where possible,” Mrs Tuohy said.
“Quilts are donated to many organisations and individuals with the hope of bringing a little colour, warmth and brightness to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.
“As a team, we work with many club members to achieve our aims.
“Quilting is an ancient tradition dating from ancient times as a necessity and has evolved through the ages not only to produce quilts but other items- clothing, household items and accessories to enhance the lives and surroundings of family and friends.”
BQI president Marlene Toomey said since its inception, the club has consistently answered calls of assistance within and beyond our own community.
“Donating to charity is a major BQI function and a personal mood booster,” she said.
“The knowledge that you’re helping others is hugely empowering and, in turn, can make you feel happier and more fulfilled.
“Research has shown that a link between making a donation to charity and increased activity in the area of the brain that registers pleasure, proving the old adage, it really is far better to give than receive.”
BQI has successful, productive, and rewarding activities in place, thanks to the amazing talent, skill, dedication and hard work of its past and present members.
“Comfort Quilts is one area with quilts of all sizes being made for those in need, within our community and elsewhere, including overseas.
“This is particularly important at times of disaster, fire and flood, while other types of quilts are made if a need is identified like weighted blankets for children with special needs, pet beds, for animal shelters, in fact, we try to accommodate other items specific to the recipient where we can.
“There is also additional assistance with our Blankets Of Love, which are small quilts donated to local and other hospitals as far as reaching Rockhampton and Gladstone to aid families of tiny babies in need.
“As a not-for-profit organisation, none of this would be possible without the support and generosity of BQI members and our local community.
“Donations of fabric and other essentials, as well as the occasional financial boost are very gratefully received and used for an excellent purpose.”
